Piedmont Landscape Association

Service Providers: Suppliers

Suppliers to the landscape industry should be more than just a place to pick up product. Your vendor should be like a business partner, understanding your operations and customer needs. The long term goal of every reputable landscape product supplier should be to help you grow your business. By ensuring your success, the vendor will ensure their own.

One of the first things you should expect from your vendor is unbiased and accurate advice. This means evaluating your individual needs and recommending the products that will do the best job at the best value. Some issues may not involve products at all; cultural control is sometimes the best method and this should come from your supplier as well.

Your landscape vendor should also be a source of knowledge.  From insect, disease and weed issues to irrigation, drainage and outdoor lighting, they should have the answers or be willing to figure it out with you. There are many different methods to achieve the same results in our industry and they all work as long as they are done correctly. Your landscape supplier deals with hundreds of contractors and knows most of these “methods”; they are there to help you pick the one that works best for you.

Building a relationship with your landscape vendors is important. It is easier to get a last minute delivery, site visit or a custom program written by someone you know than by someone you don’t, but that should not be the only reason. Staying in contact with your vendors keeps you in touch with what is going on in the industry. Information about new laws and regulations, new products, new pest problems and control methods can all come from your landscape vendor. You may be surprised to find out that your landscape supplier will help you design your hardscapes, irrigation or lighting job.  Some suppliers are even offering project lead services for new jobs going out to bid.

The role of the landscape product vendor is always changing to fit the needs of the industry. They are an important source of professional products and endless source information. They can save you headaches, teach you and your employees and help you to be profitable. Our vendors are a valuable asset that are often overlooked.
